TIMELINE: What the district attorney says led to the officer-involved shooting at Austin-East

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – We learn more about what happened before the death of an Austin-East Magnet High School student who was shot dead in a school bath during a confrontation with Knoxville police last week, according to Knox County’s attorney general Charme Allen.

Allen said Wednesday that her office would release related body camera footage from last week’s shootings that resulted in the death of Anthony Thompson Jr. 17and injury to a Knoxville police officer.

Allen previously said at a press conference that she would not publish the Bodycam footage due to the ongoing investigation. Allen said the video “must serve as criminal evidence” before it can even be considered for publication.

Allen said Wednesday that there is now a completed investigation on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s file, and she also clarified that the release of the Bodycam videos would be shared during the press conference.

The officials initially responded to a domestic violence dispute and asked Thompson to speak to him about a report against him, the prosecutor said. Allen said the officers did not know Thompson had a gun.

The Knoxville Police Department received the first 911 call reporting a “domestic incident” involving Thompson and his girlfriend, a 17-year-old teenager. The girl’s mother, Regina Perkins, spoke to the shipping company.

12:30 pm

The first domestic incident occurs between Thompson and his girlfriend at school.

12:48 p.m.

The second domestic incident occurs between the teenagers. Thompson’s friend goes home for the day and tells her mother.

1:16 pm

The friend’s mother, Regina Perkins, sends Thompson a text message informing him that she has called the police.

1:18 pm – 1:59 pm

Security cameras from Austin-East show Thompson walking and running in the hallways of the school. then stop and sit on a staircase in the school.

1:59 p.m.

Perkins speaks to 911 Dispatch about the domestic incident with her daughter and Thompson.

2:11 pm

KPD officer Jonathon Clabough answers the residence and speaks to Perkins and her daughter (Thompson’s friend). She tells Officer Clabough that she is scared and that Thompson threatened her.

Officer Clabough tells her he knows she is young and in love, but he didn’t want her to get hurt.

“He’s going to jail or he’s going to have arrest warrants,” Clabough tells her. He then contacts the Willson SRO, which is located in Austin-East.

2:16 pm

Back at school, Thompson walks into the school bathroom. He doesn’t appear again.

2:23 pm

Thompson receives a text message from his girlfriend that the police have been to their house. She sends him a photo of the KPD cruiser and the departing officer Clabough.

2:51 pm

Thompson receives a text message from another student that the police were at school and were walking down the hall to keep an eye out. Thompson replies, “Bet.” (This means “ok”).

2:53 p.m. – 2:54 p.m.

Officer Clabough arrives at school and speaks to SRO Officer Adam Willson, Officer Brian Baldwin, and Lt. Cash outside of school. The officers then all enter the school building.

2:55 p.m. – 2:58 p.m.

The four officers begin searching the bathrooms at the school after learning that Thompson was in a bathroom.

2:59 pm

The officers enter Officer Willson’s SRO and security office, where they discuss Thompson’s whereabouts and learn from the SSO that Thompson is usually hanging out in a specific bathroom.

3:11 pm

The officers go to the bathroom that Thompson had entered almost an hour earlier and enter.

You can find Thompson sitting on a dresser in a bathroom.

You ask him to get up. He’s standing. He leaves the booth. The officers put their hands on him. He turns.

3:12 pm

A shot is fired from Thompson’s person. The gun falls to the floor of the stable in the fight.

Officer Clabough fires two shots.

One bullet hits Officer Willson. A bullet hits Thompson.

Both Officer Willson and Thompson fall to the ground.

3:16 pm

The school nurse walks into the bathroom and begins resuscitating Thompson.

Willson suffers a gunshot wound in his lower leg and is taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
