Lucy Killen joined Loyd J Bourgeois LLC as a family law attorney.
“The passion, experience and dedication that she brings with her fit well with our core values at LJB Legal of getting things done, doing the right thing, acting transparently and making a compassionate difference every day,” says Bourgeois.
In 2010, Loyd Bourgeois opened his law firm on River Road in Luling. For many years he was a true solo practitioner with no additional staff. In those days he mainly practiced disability rights, both social security disability and ERISA long-term disability (the type normally provided by an employer).
Past customers regularly asked if he was involved in car accidents and other personal injury cases. In other cases, they called and complained that they hired another attorney in town for their car injury case, but didn’t get the attention, information, or family atmosphere that they experienced in Bourgeois’ office. Eager to help his clients with their legal proceedings, he decided to expand into personal injury.
The company began to grow and with it came the need for additional office staff. Bourgeois made his first hiring.
At the same time he was also asked to deal with family law matters. A previous client was getting divorced or his sister was in a custody battle. Bourgeois regularly rejected these cases. He had made a name for himself in disability and injury law and was simply not interested in venturing into family law and dealing with issues such as custody, spouse support, divorce, and property sharing.
But then things changed for him. Bourgeois said the main thing that opened his eyes was a previous client who told him, “You say you help in difficult times in life (disability and assault) but divorce is one of the toughest times people have faced and I need your help. ” And shortly thereafter, a close family member divorced and came to him for advice. Bourgeois says what he learned to help him has changed him and the way he thinks for the better.
He began taking on these cases from former clients and the people who referred them. The news began to spread and the family law business took off. His staff grew by a few more. The firm was featured on Expertise.com’s lists of the Top 13 Family Lawyers in New Orleans and the Top 18 Divorce Lawyers in New Orleans.
Last year Bourgeois brought on board family lawyer Lucy Killen in an “Of Counsel” role, which is a fancy legal way of saying “as needed.”

As the year went on, the “as needed” grew and grew. It was soon “always needed”.
On March 15, Killen joined the firm as a full-time family law attorney.
“Loyd is an experienced and compassionate advocate for his clients with disabilities and injuries. After years of asking these clients to focus his clients on family law and to help them with their pressing family law issues, he asked me for help. Over the past year I’ve learned that it’s not just about words – he and his team really care about their customers. The culture they cultivate in their office and with their clients and their community is contagious. It was an easy decision to team up with his team on a full-time basis, ”said Killen.
“This is a huge milestone for LJB Legal,” said Bourgeois. “When I opened the company a little over 10 years ago, I wanted to feel comfortable at work and know that I was really helping people and contributing to my community. I wanted to help as many people as possible. Every decision I’ve made since then has been driven with that goal in mind. “
Killen lives in Destrehan with her husband and dogs, but is originally from New Iberia and attended the AB Freeman School of Business at Tulane University, where she majored in business and English.
She has taught in the New Orleans metropolitan area as part of the Teach for America program and has worked in the New Orleans city government advocating health programs in support of the city.
She then attended Loyola Law and is licensed in Louisiana.
Prior to joining the LJB Legal team as head of family law, Killen owned and operated her own family law firm in New Orleans.

She has been a family law attorney for 10 years and was added to the SuperLawyers list of Louisiana Rising Stars in 2020.
“Lucy and I were very similar because we had a customer-centric culture and provided compassionate legal assistance during difficult times in life,” said Bourgeois. “The combination enables us to offer St. Charles Parish a new and broader range of services.”
