PHOENIX – Another Democrat has joined the race for the next Arizona Attorney General.
State Representative Diego Rodriguez von Laveen made the announcement Thursday, pledging to rely on his extensive experience in the Arizona criminal justice system to “bring transparency, integrity and accountability back to the attorney general’s office.”
“For years the attorney general’s office has been run by pressure groups trying to fill their own pockets instead of protecting the people of Arizona,” Rodriguez said in the announcement. “As corporations raked in profits and power, the Arizona workers struggled to make ends meet.
“As your next attorney general, I will use my experience in both the state house and the courtroom to defend corporate interests, help Arizona’s hard-working families get back on their feet, protect our most vulnerable citizens, and bring real change to our criminals bring justice. “
Rodriguez has been in office since 2009.
Prior to joining the Legislature, Rodriguez served four years as a prosecutor in the Administrative Offenses Division of the Pima County Attorney, before starting his own law firm specializing in criminal defense and personal injury in 2008.
His announcement comes a day after her colleague Kris Mayes threw her name in the ring for the office.
Former Arizona Supreme Court Justice Andrew Gould, former First District Candidate Tiffany Shedd, and former US Attorney General’s Border Patrol Officer Lacy Cooper are vying for position on the Republican side.
Republican attorney general Mark Brnovich is temporary and running for the US Senate in 2022.
