The circumstances behind the arrest and the video content are currently being reviewed, Coffman said in a press release. He said Irvin and his family are currently reviewing their legal options.

The East Chicago Police Department has largely refuted Irvin’s allegations of excessive violence. Rivera said Irvin tried to take an officer’s weapon during a fight – something Irvin has denied.

Kim McGee is a Black Lives Matter Northwest Indiana / Gary representative and has been contacted by Irvin’s family regarding the matter.

McGee said the group believes charges against Irvin – including a police officer’s battery – are unfounded and the group is calling for an independent review of the case.

The video appears to show an officer punching Irvin in the face and body during the fight.

“It was just useless, useless stuff,” Irvin said last week.

Irvin said he had pain in his jaw, ribs and arms.

Police said they had initiated a traffic obstruction because the music from Irvin’s vehicle was loud. The bass of the music started shaking the fully-tagged windows of the officer’s patrol car, alerting him the vehicle was approaching from behind, police said.
