PHOENIX – Maricopa County attorney Allister Adel thanked the doctors and their staff on Friday in the first statement attributed to her since she was hospitalized for a brain injury on election day a month ago.

“I am grateful for the quality medical treatment I am receiving and I would like to publicly thank the medical teams who have looked after me,” she said in a statement sent via email.

“I’m still recovering at the Barrow Neurological Institute and look forward to returning home in the coming weeks.”

Adel gave no indication of how long it would be before she could go back to work. She has been hospitalized for cerebral haemorrhage since emergency surgery on November 3rd. The injury occurred after she fell at home, her office said.

On November 19, Barrow officials said Adel was responding well to treatment.

“I feel stronger every day and while I know recovery from a brain injury is a slow and steady process, I look forward to working with my medical team to ensure a safe and complete recovery,” Adel said in the Statement from Friday.

Adel, a Republican, defeated Democratic challenger Julie Gunnigle to keep her position. Adel was appointed to replace Bill Montgomery, who was leaving for a seat on the state’s Supreme Court.

Adel’s victory made her the first woman to be elected Maricopa County’s attorney, chief attorney for Metro Phoenix.

“To my family at the Maricopa Law Office, thank you for continuing to focus on the important work of our office,” she said.

“They are professionals of the highest order and I take pride in the work you do to keep the office moving.”

Here is Adel’s full statement:

For the past month, my family and I have been overwhelmed with the support from this community. It has given us a lot of comfort during that time. I am grateful for the high quality medical treatment I am receiving and would like to publicly thank the medical teams who have looked after me. I’m still recovering at the Barrow Neurological Institute and look forward to returning home in the weeks ahead.

Thank you to my family at the Maricopa County Law Office for continuing to focus on the vital work of our law firm. They are professionals at the highest level and I take pride in what you do to keep the office moving.

Finally, I am proud to be the first woman to be elected Maricopa County Attorney, and I want to thank the Maricopa County voters for entrusting me with this honor. I feel stronger every day and while I know recovery from a brain injury is a slow and steady process, I look forward to working with my medical team to ensure a safe and complete recovery.
