Texas Deputy Attorney General Calls Biles ‘Selfish, Childish National Embarrassment’ for Dropping All-Around
Texas assistant attorney general called Simone Biles, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, a “selfish, childish national embarrassment” on Wednesday. Biles, who lives and trains in Spring, Texas, withdrew from the all-around event in Tokyo the day before and dropped out of the team earlier this week because of stress, pressure and psychological problems. Aaron Reitz retweeted an author’s remark about ex-Olympian Kerri Strug, writing, “Contrary to our selfish, childish national embarrassment, Simone Biles.” The author said that Strug had competed for Team USA in 1996 despite an ankle injury Chance to give gold, and wrote, “The great will find a way.” Although Strug competed on an injured ankle, the tweet was false and Strug wasn’t the team’s only chance for gold. The author later tweeted a correction. However, he did not delete the original tweet, which had collected more than 3,000 retweets. The tweets follow several right-wing politicians and commentators like JD Vance, who are targeting Biles for her retreat.
